Thaen Khwan (แทนขวัญ)
Thai. Name for a species of
water lily,
with the botanical name Nymphaea tan khwan and commonly as the Tan-khwan
Water Lily. This free-blooming hardy water lily originates from
Thailand
and blooms all year round. It is a hybrid of the Perris Fire Opal
and the Sirius, and was bred by Pairatana Songpanich of the
Department of Agriculture (fig.).
The colour is deep pink, almost red, and some varieties have a rosy
colour. The form of the flower is star-like, with layers of petals,
formed by 44 to 48 petals. It is depicted on a Thai postage stamp issued in 2008 (fig.).
