Krung Thep (กรุงเทพฯ) LISTEN

Thai. Abbreviation of the official Thai name for Bangkok. In full (fig.), this is: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit (กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุธยา มหาดิลกภพ นพรัตน์ราชธานีบุรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์มหาสถาน อมรพิมานอวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยะวิษณุกรรมประสิทธ์) LISTEN, which translates ‘City of Angels, Great City, Eternal Jewel of Indra, Invincible Land Ruled by Indra, Mighty Pinnacle of the World, Beautiful Royal City of Nine Gems, Fertile Royal Palace, Mighty Place, Eternal Dwelling Place of the Incarnated God, Gift of Indra, Accomplished by Vishnukam’ or alternatively ‘City of Angels, Great City, Immortal Jeweled City, Impregnable Fortress of the god Indra, Capital of the World, Decorated with Nine Jewels (fig.), Dwelling place of Happiness and Provided with Enormous Palaces not inferior to the Heavenly Dwelling Place of an Incarnated god, Gift of Indra, Built by Vishnukam. Sometimes Rattanakosin is translated as ‘Residence of the Emerald Buddha’ and the name Sakka translates in Thai as ‘thao sakkathevarat’ and is a designation for the god Indra. The full ceremonial name of the city was given by King Phra Phutta Yotfa Chulalok and later edited by King Mongkut. The city's full name can be found in front of the Bangkok City Hall (map - fig.) and on the quayside near the Temple of Dawn (map - fig.).
