Lawkananda Zedi (လောကနန္ဒာစေတီ)
Burmese.
‘Joy
of the World
Pagoda’.
Name of a Buddhist temple
in Sittwe, in Myanmar's Rakhine State,
which is famous for a ca. 45 cm tall bronze Buddha image,
with a body that is completely
covered in countless reliefs of small Buddha
images, that
are believed to represent his 500 previous
incarnations. This image, reminiscent of representations of the
Radiating Avalokitesvara
(fig.),
is claimed to be 2,000 years old. It is seated in the
bhumisparsa
pose while holding a
star-shaped flower with 8 petals in its lap. Copies of this image, both in
bronze (fig.)
and in other materials (fig.),
are today reproduced and can hence occasionally be seen in other places (fig.).
There is a pagoda with a similar name
in
Old
Bagan.
