  Radiating Avalokitesvara

Thailand

This eight-armed bodhisattva is a form of Avalokitesvara (fig.). He wears the image of Amitabha in his headdress and his body is covered with countless small Buddha images, whilst his arms are spread around his body like a halo, giving him the name Radiating Avalokitesvara. This sculpture from the National Museum in Bangkok (fig.) was found in Prasat Meuang Singh historical site (fig.) and dates from the 13th century AD. It is made in Lopburi style with influences from Khmer art.
