Traditional household gadgets, namely betel nut and lightning tools: 1. a betel nut cutter, in Thai known as takrai nihb mahk, which is used to slice the betel seeds, as well as betel nuts, i.e. the fruits (fig.) of the areca palm (fig.); 2. a betel nut grinder, in Thai called taban, i.e. a copper cylindrical tool with a pestle, which is used to mash the mixture of betel nut, chalk and spices, making it finer and easier to chew, as well as some bai chaphlu or wild betel leaves (fig.), which are used to wrap the mixture (fig.); a cylinder-and-piston igniter, i.e. a primitive fire starting device or lighter, which in Thai is known as taban fai, as well as a woodfire; 4. earthen oil lamp, in Thai called phaang pha theed, as well as some Frangipani or ton lanthom (fig.) flowers and Michelia or jampah flowers (fig.).
