  Four Sights

The Four Sights, also referred to as the Four Encounters, in Burmese style. From left to right are: a monk seated in the lotus position and holding a prakam, i.e. wooden prayer beads; a human corpse lying on the ground with a black raven sitting on his belly, ready to eat, while another raven is waiting its turn in a tree; an old man; and a sick man. Prince Siddhartha, who is dressed in white and wearing a gaung-baung, i.e. a Myanmar turban (fig.), is sitting with his servant Chandakain in a chariot, which is pulled by the horse Kanthaka (fig.).
