  Daw Gyam Phaya Su

Myanmar

Daw Gyam Phaya Su, a brick temple complex in Inwa, said to date from the Ava Period. The name, which means Lady Gyam Pagoda Complex, suggests that it was built by a woman in a senior position who was named Gyam.

Though, besides this, there is no additional or historical information on record. The walled complex has a bell-shaped pagoda sur-rounded by some smaller edifices.

There are also two large zedi with receding terraces in the north-eastern corner of the complex, the outermost being somewhat smaller than its neighbour.

Often, temple buildings, like many at this complex, are guarded by mythological creatures, such as Manuthiha, i.e.  sphinx-like man-lions (fig.), and mythological lions known as chintha (fig.), which are usually placed at the corners of a structure. Besides the many brick structures, the temple also features several Buddha images (fig.).
