While most Buddha images at Daw Gyam Phaya Su, a brick temple complex in Inwa (fig.), are seated in the bhumi-sparsa pose, this one is performing a vitarka mudra (fig.).

The latter mudra indicates ‘exposition’ and refers to education, similar to the dhammachakka mudra (fig.), while bhumisparsa means ‘touching the earth’ a mudra also known as maravijaya, i.e. ‘victory over Mara’.

There are also several empty shrines from which images have been removed while some of the ones found here today seem to be placed here more recently.
