The ton son chat is a pine tree with branches that grow in layers of whorls, i.e. radiating from and around the stem, reminiscent of the royal multi-layered umbrella which is also called chat in Thai (fig.). In English, it is known by a variety of common names, including Norfolk Pine, Star Pine, Polynesian Pine, Triangle Tree, and Living Christmas Tree.
