chattra or chat is the
multi-layered royal umbrella,
a symbol of royalty, that
stands at the origin of the bell-shaped
pagoda called
chedi, which became a more permanent
form of the cone-shaped umbrella which was traditionally placed on the tomb of a
king after his demise, indicating it to be the burial place of a king. The
throne in this

Phra Racha Banlang Pradap Muk in
Dusit Maha Prasat
(fig.),
the oldest building in the compound of the
Grand Palace, which was commissioned
by King
Rama I.
