Leeches (fig.) do not have a painful bite, but they do inject an anti-haemostatic agent that prevents the blood from curdling, enabling it to suck blood without difficulty. Hence, the bite-wound will keep on bleeding for a while, causing a typical tear-like pattern of blood.
