Leeches, referred to in Thai as taak (fig.), typically come out in the rainy season, and are commonly found in rainforests.

 

They will attach to passer-bys, people and mammals alike, and cling to their victims to suck blood, after which they will let go. This one had made its way in someone's  shoe.
