  Wat Tham Seua (Krabi)

Thailand

Wat Tham Seua is a Buddhist temple complex in Krabi located in a valley and surrounded by forested mountains and caves, that used to be the natural habitat of tigers. Later a meditation center was built at this location, which over time evolved into a temple.

Adjacent to and part of the temple is a high mountain, of which the summit can be reached by climbing a steep and strenuous stairway with 1,237 steps.

Besides a panoramic view, the mountain top features a gilded chedi, and a large gilded Buddha statue seated in the meditation pose, as well as several smaller Buddha statues, including those part of the Phra prajam wan system (fig.).

Due to its religious nature, many visitors come here to worship and pray, while some deposit coins in the crevices of the surrounding limestone rocks in an act known as pae riyan (fig.).
