Tripitaka
is an equivalent for the
Chinese name Sanzang, which was a traditional honorific name for any Buddhist
monk during the Tang Dynasty (fig.). It is repeatedly used to describe
Xuanzang (fig.), the monk who went on a
pilgrimage to India in order to obtain a copy
of the
sutras, as
recorded in the
Xiyouji, the
chronicle of the
‘Journey to the West’ (fig.).
