  Tripitaka

China

Tripitaka is an equivalent for the Chinese name Sanzang, which was a traditional honorific name for any Buddhist monk during the Tang Dynasty (fig.). It is repeatedly used to describe Xuanzang (fig.), the monk who went on a pilgrimage to India in order to obtain a copy of the sutras, as recorded in the Xiyouji, the chronicle of the ‘Journey to the West’ (fig.).
