Tomb of Nguyen Emperor Khai Dinh (interior)

Vietnam

The interior of the burial chamber of Nguyen Emperor Khai Dinh is elaborately decorated with themes such as the Four Seasons, i.e. the Four Sacred Symbols, made of innumerable pieces of colourful porcelain, whilst the ceiling has an intricate painting of Nine Dragons, the pinnacle of everlasting power, as well as the number that corresponds to his nine-year reign.

The building, also known as Khai Thanh Palace, features several photos and statues of this twelfth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, who ruled from 1916 to his death in 1925. The setting sun behind his statue refers to his demise.
