  Vietnamese Jungle Queen

PREVIOUS BUTTERFLY NEXT BUTTERFLY Vietnam

When resting Vietnamese Jungle Queens, such as this one spotted in Sapa in northern Vietnam, typically close their wings, thus showing only the underside. Only in flight, the upper side of the wings becomes visible, which are dark ochre with black diamond-shaped spots near the apexes.

Some of the spots of this species Stichophthalma howqua of the subspecies tonkiniana, especially those on the hindwings, have an upside-down V-mark attached at the base, making them look like fish-shaped patterns  (fig.).
