An aerial view of the
Singapore
Strait, with
countless ships lying at anchor outside the Port of Singapore, one
of the world's busiest ports in terms of shipping
tonnage and part of the
South China Sea. In addition, the so-called Phillips Channel to the south of
the city state, which connects to the Strait of Malacca, narrows to a width of
only 1.5 nautical miles,
creating a bottle neck that chokes maritime traffic
on this
second busiest sea route
of the world, significantly.
