The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh serves as the official
residence of the king of
Cambodia.
His actual home, i.e. the building with the spire in the background of
this picture, is generally referred to as Khemarin, a compound made up of the
words
Khmer
and
In, i.e.
Indra. |
The Royal Palace has a defensive outer wall and
consists of three main inner compounds, which are also
divided by walls. The main compound contains the Throne
Hall, seen in the picture above, as well as some lesser
edifices, including the Moonlight Pavilion and Hor
Samran Phirun, both visible in this photo on the right. |

On the
Southside of the palace stands
the Silver Pagoda, a bell-shaped
stupa
located in a compound named Wat
Phreah Keo,
which is a royal temple and the Cambodian equivalent of
Wat Phra Kaew in
Bangkok, including the murals of
the
Ramayana.
