  Ramkamhaeng Maha Raj

 

Thailand

Statue of King Ramkamhaeng, ruler of Sukhothai from 1279 to 1298 AD, who is deemed a Maha Raj, i.e. a ‘Great King’, at Uthayaan Rachaphak (fig.). He designed the Thai script, deriving it from Khmer, introduced absolute monarchy and made Theravada Buddhism the official religion.
