Portrait of Queen Sunandha Kumariratana, a half-sister and one of four principal queens of King Chulalongkorn (fig.), i.e. Rama V (fig.), who was killed on 31 May 1880, when the boat she was traveling in on her way to the Royal Summer Palace (fig.) in Bang Pa-in got involved in an accident and capsized.

Despite the presence of many onlookers, the queen together with her daughter Princess Kannaphon Phetcharat (fig.) and an unborn son drowned because no one dare come to their rescue, as the then law forbade commoners to touch any royal, even in order to save their lives.
