To commemorate a centenary since H.R.H. Prince Bhanurangsi in 1883 became the First Director General of the Post Department, an historical event celebrated on 4 August 1983 by the inauguration of his statue in front of the General Post Office (fig.) in Bangkok (fig.) and this commemorative stamp issue. Though the Prince was appointed to the position of Director on 2 July 1881, the Department of Posts didn't open to the public until 4 August 1883, hence the date chosen for the centenary.
