The Pai Memorial Bridge in
Mae Hong Son
Province
dates from WW II and was built in 1942 by the Japanese in
order to send their troops into
Burma.
Though less well-known, it was at the time of equal strategic importance as
the infamous Bridge over the River Kwae in
Kanchanaburi
(fig.).

Pai Memorial Bridge
The bridge crosses the Pai River,
just outside Pai's
Amphur
Meuang, but is
in disuse ever since a new concrete bridge was built.
The bridge is today surrounded by paddy fields, which perhaps gives an idea
of how important good roads and bridges still are in order to be able to
cross this terrain.
