RELIGION & MYTHOLOGY

  Hui Neng

Thailand

Marble statue of Master Hui Neng (638-713 AD), the sixth Sangha leader of Zen Buddhism in China, at Tamnak Phra Mae Kwan Im (fig.) in Bangkok. He was cutting firewood for a living, but became a monk after having heard the Buddha's Diamond Sutra recited.

He is depicted seated in the lotus position while being surrounded by the flames of the metaphorical fire of suffering caused by being in the world. The statue is somewhat reminiscent of the Thich Quang Duc monument in Saigon (fig.).
