The
Mahazedi
Pagoda, i.e. the
Temple of the ‘Great Stupa’ in
Bago, was
built by the Burmese King
Bayinnaung
(fig.)
in 1560 AD, in order to enshrine a tooth-relic of the
Buddha,
which was brought from
SriLanka.
The lower
terrace of the
stupa
is encircled by 64
smaller stupas and from here a steep stairway gives
access to the top platform of the main
zedi.

After
the demanding climb, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view
of the area, including an aerial view of the ca. 19
meter tall and 82 meter long
