  Mahazedi Pagoda (Bago)

Myanmar

The Mahazedi Pagoda, i.e. the Temple of the ‘Great Stupa’ in Bago, was built by the Burmese King Bayinnaung (fig.) in 1560 AD, in order to enshrine a tooth-relic of the Buddha, which was brought from Sri Lanka.

The lower terrace of the stupa is encircled by 64 smaller stupas and from here a steep stairway gives access to the top platform of the main zedi.
