Bayinnaung (ဘုရင့်နောင်)

Name of a historically important Burmese King and military leader, who was born on 16 January 1516 AD in Taungoo, at that point a former vassal state of Ava Kingdom, and perished in Pegu on 10 October 1581, at the age of 65. He became king of the Taungoo Dynasty on 30 April 1550 and ruled for 31 years until his dead. He is considered one of the three greatest kings of Burma, along with Anawrahta (fig.) and Alaungpaya (fig.). His greatest legacy are his military campaigns, that led to the unification of Burma and the integration of many other former sovereign kingdoms and states into the Burmese Taungoo Empire, i.e. the second Myanmar Empire. His full name is Bayinnaung Kyawhtin Nawrahta and in Thai, he is fully known as Bureng Nong Kayodin Norathah (fig.), and has also been given the title Phra Chao Cha-na Sip Thit (พระเจ้าชนะสิบทิศ), i.e. the ‘Lord who Conquered Ten Directions’.
