  Long Corridor

China

The Long Corridor at the Beijing Summer Palace (fig.), runs along the edge of the manmade lake, which was dug in the shape of a peach, i.e. a symbol of longevity, and the excavated earth was used to built the adjacent Longevity Hill.

In Chinese iconography, the bat (fig.) represents good luck and the 728 meters long wooden corridor is built in the form of a bat's wings, thus referring to happiness (foo). The structure has 4 octagonal sala-like pavilions, representing the Four Seasons, whereas the number 8 is regarded as a lucky number. Among the many decorations are plenty of bat figures, including on the painted ends of the horizontal support beams (fig.), inside the gazebos, and on the roof fittings (fig.).
