  Linh Ung Pagoda

Vietnam

The Linh Ung Pagoda, known in Vietnamese as Chua Linh Ung in Da Nang, was inaugurated in July 2010 after six years of construction.

It features several large edifices, including a 67 meter tall image of Kuan Yin and a nine-tiered pagoda, as well as large marble images of the Buddha, as well as of the Ten Principal Disciples and of some mythological animals.

The main entrance gate has an image of Wei Tuo, who in Vietnam is known as Ho Phap Vi Da (fig.). Oddly, he is here not holding his usual attribute, i.e. a sword-like vajra-staff.

In front of the giant Kuan Yin statue is a marble carving of Huan Xi Fo or Mi Le Fo, the Chinese ‘smiling buddha’ (fig.), i.e. a form of Maitreya, here seated on a lotus pedestal (fig.) which sits on a cloud that is surrounded by a dragon.

There is also an imitation cave with in front a large Buddha image seated in the half lotus position whilst performing an abhaya mudra with his right hand.

Many of the temple's buildings, including the main prayer hall, all have Chinese-style roofs with upward curved corners, a feature related to feng shui, in which it is believed that curved lines ward off evil spirits, whilst straight lines are said to attract evil. At the main courtyard there are large marble statues of the Eighteen Arahats (fig.), who in Vietnamese are known as Thap Bat La Han (Thập Bát La Hán - fig.).
