Naval Dockyard
Shipyard of the
Royal Thai Navy, located on the
west bank of the
Chao Phraya
River in
Thonburi,
directly to the opposite of the
Grand Palace (fig.).
The navy compound
features
several

The Naval Dockyard was established by King
Rama I
in the early days of his reign (1782-1809
AD), in the vicinity of the
Thonburi Palace
(fig.),
the residence of King
Taksin,
and adjacent to an area where King Rama I had his own initial palace
built (fig.).
During the reign of King
Rama V,
the Naval Dockyard was further developed. In 1883, factories were built
and in 1888 a large wooden dry-dock was built
to the south of
Wat Rakhang
(fig.). It is also known as the Royal Dockyard and in Thai it is called Uh
Reua
Luang
(อู่เรือหลวง).
