paifang or memorial
archway, i.e.
the
entrance
gate, to the
Temple of
Confucius (fig.)
in
Beijing, the second largest of is kind in China, after the one in Confucius'
hometown of Qufu.
In the courtyard stands a white marble statue of the
philosopher and religious reformer,
holding one hand on top
of the other, a
mudra
or hand position that
symbolizes the balance of
yin
and
yang (fig.).

The temple also features a stone tablet, put on the back
of a
Bi Xi,
i.e. a stone
tortoise
in the form of a pedestal
supporting a
stele (fig.).
