Its spines are highly venomous and in case of severe envenoming it is potentially lethal to humans. Upon contact, it can cause cardiovascular, neuromuscular, and cytolytic effects ranging from mild reactions, such as swelling to extreme pain and paralysis in upper and lower extremities.
