During the rice growing season, many farmers in northern Thailand, especially those belonging to hill tribe communities and other minority groups that adhere to animism, place talaew, i.e. circular or star shaped objects plaited from strips of bamboo, at (fig.) or in their fields as a protection for the offers made to Poh Sop, the goddess of rice (fig.).
