Myanmar

The people that live on Inle Lake (fig.) in central Myanmar's Shan State are famous for their floating garden agriculture (fig.), for which they dredge up (fig.) grass-like weeds (fig.) from the bottom of the lake, that they mix with water hyacinths that have natural buoyancy (fig.) in order to create floating gardens on which they grow a variety of crops, most commonly tomatoes.

 

In order to anchor these raft-like structures so they wouldn't drift away with the wind or currents, they are pinned down into the soil by long sticks, that are widely sold on local markets around the lake, like this one at the foot of the Thaung Tho hilltop temple (fig.).
