In the photo above, a jade cong in a Xi'an jade factory and in the photo below, a taller one on display at the Nanking Museum.

 

Though the original function and meaning of this ancient Chinese artifact remain unknown, it is believed that the square shape represents the earth and the circular form heaven, as in ancient fang kong qian coins (fig.).
