1. The female
cicada
lays its eggs and dies soon after they
have hatched; 2.
the newborn nymphs drop to the ground; 3. the
nymphs burrow and start their underground
lives using the tree roots as food source; 4. in due time the
nymphs dig an exit tunnel using their strong front legs, surface and
climb up the tree where they moult into a full-grown cicada; 5. by then it
has reached its reproductive age
and starts looking for a mating partner.
