bodhisattva
of learning and wisdom in
Mahayana
Buddhism.
In
iconography,
he is often depicted riding a
lion and holding a
lotus flower.
Whereas the lotus is a symbol of wisdom
and
Enlightenment,
the bodhisattva riding the lion represents him using
wisdom to tame the mind. As such, he is known as
‘the bodhisattva of keen awareness’. In Sanskrit, he is
known as
Manjushri (fig.).
