Wat Phnom, i.e. a temple in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh located on a hill, called phnom in Khmer, and built by a wealthy lady, called Penh (fig.), and whose statue can be found in and around the temple, where she also has a personal shrine (fig.).

She had the temple built in order to house a piece of wood from a candlenut tree which she in 1372 AD had found floating in the Tonlé Sap River (fig.) and that contained images of four buddha's, as well as an image of Vishnu.

The compound name of this venerated height and of the lady who built the temple on its summit was in 1434 AD chosen to be the name for the city when it was founded.
