The escutcheon of
Ubon Ratchathani shows a pond with
lotus flowers.
Ubon is a general
name for flowers of the family of water lilies, including the lotus. The people
that founded this city originally came from the region of
Nong Bua Lamphu,
a marshland (nong) with lotus flowers (bua), South of Wiangchan (now Vientiane).
They fled their land when a great (racha) danger was imminent and they choose to use this event and the memory of
their homeland of lotuses in the naming of their new city.
