Great Barbet

Common name for a circa 23 centimeter tall bird in the family Megalaimidae, with the scientific name Megalaima virens. It is green, with a dark blue-green head, a dark greenish-brown mantle, red under-tail coverts, and a dark brown breast. The lower breast and belly are streaked yellowish, and its has a long, whitish bill, with a yellowish base and a dark stripe on the tip of the upper mandible, and with several black protruding hairs between the bill and the forehead, typical with barbets (fig.). It is a common resident in Thailand, where it can be found in evergreen and occasionally deciduous forests (fig.), from an altitude of 600 meters to the highest summits. In Thai, this bird is called nok tang lo.
