Beung Kahn (บึงกาฬ)

Thai. Dark swamp. Name of the provincial capital of the in 2011 newly created province (map) or jangwat of the same name. Until 22 March 2011, it was administrated as part of Nong Kai Province, but was split off and elevated to provincial status, in order to more easily manage administrative work and solve border problems in remote areas. The new province of Beung Kahn is located in Northeast Thailand, to the East of Nong Kai, about 765 kms from Bangkok, and has eight amphur. Since the province only came into existence in 2011, it may at times still be referred to as part of Nong Kai. Places of interest include Wat Ahong Silawaht (วัดอาฮงศิลาวาส), the Luang Pho Phra Yai (หลวงพ่อพระใหญ่) Buddha image at Wat Photharam (วัดโพธาราม), and Sadeua Mae Nahm Khong (สะดือแม่น้ำโขง), i.e. the  ‘Navel of the Mae Khong River’, a point in the river of which it is said that is so deep that it can't be measured yet is also alleged to be about 200 metres deep.
