Temple of the Tooth
The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is located on the grounds of the former Singhalese Royal Palace.
It houses a tooth of Buddha (fig.), which is part of the relics that were spread around the world after his death and cremation.
According to legend, the relic was brought from northern India to Sri Lanka by a royal couple disguised as Brahmins, in order to avoid discovery.
Kandy, which was the last capital of the Singhalese kings, is today a UNESCO world heritage site.
