The complex of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is a UNESCO world heritage site and consists of both ancient and more modern edifices.

In many parts of the complex, elephants are an important theme used in decoration, as seen here as part of the cornices of the pillars in the main hall of the New Palace building.

The tooth itself is housed in a shrine, that is concealed by a curtain, in this photo decorated with an image of what is thought to be the royal couple that brought the relic from India. The tooth's sanctuary is guarded by a fence and two pairs of elephant's tusks.

The wall that runs along the surrounding moat of the complex (fig.) is known as the Water Waves Wall and the holes in the wall are used at night to light coconut oil lamps.
