The escutcheon of
Saraburi shows a
mondop
of
Wat Phra Phutthabaat
(fig.),
built by order of king
Phra Phutta Leut La to house the
Phraphutthabaht (a
footprint of the Buddha) from the
amphur ‘Phraphuttabaht’. According to legend
this footprint was found by a hunter during the rule of king
Song Tham.
The hunter was chasing a wounded deer which after drinking from a puddle was
suddenly cured. On closer examination the puddle seemed to be a pit filled with
rainwater. When the hunter drank from it he was miraculously cured from a
skin disease. The pit with rainwater eventually turned out to be a footprint of
the Buddha.
