NATURE & GASTRONOMY

  Red Dwarf Honeybee

Thailand

The Red Dwarf Honeybee is a very small-sized species of bee, with the scientific name Apis florea, and is one of two species placed in the subgenus Micrapis (dwarf honeybees), together with the Black Dwarf Honeybee (Apis andreniformis - fig.).

Bees often carry orange blobs on their legs, as can be seen with both these individuals. These orange balls are loads of pollen and nectar that some species of worker bees pack into the long pollen hairs of their flattened hind legs. When full, these pollen baskets, sometimes named bee bread, can be quite conspicuous. Other species of bees collect nectar in internal organs called crops, from which they regurgitate the fluid back at the nest.
