Phra
Sri
Sakyamuni
Buddha
image at
Bangkok's
Wat Suthat (fig.)
was in 1808 transported from
Sukhothai to Bangkok by raft, on the orders of
Rama I.
On arrival at
Tha Chang Wang Luang,
the large image could not pass through the then
city gate, which was consequently
demolished. After the image had passed, a new gate was built and named Pratu
Tha Phra, i.e. ‘Buddha Wharf Gate’ or ‘Buddha Port Gate’.
