Phra Sangkatjaai,
whose image is often mistaken for that of
Budai or
Huan Xi Fo,
the Chinese ‘smiling
buddha’.
He is regularly depicted meditating in a sitting pose with both hands on his belly.
In
Sanskrit,
his
name
is
Maha
Katyayana (fig.).
Whereas
Huan Xi Fo is bald and dressed in a
robe that covers both shoulders but shows his belly, Phra Sangkatjaai
clearly has hair and is dressed in a robe that covers
only one shoulder as well as his belly. He is one of the
Ten Principal Disciples.
