Osprey
Common name
for a large diurnal bird of prey, which is also commonly known as Sea Hawk, Fish
Hawk and Fish Eagle, and with the scientific designation Pandion haliaetus. It
is found in many parts of the world, and has several subspecies. It has very
dark brown upperparts and pure white underparts, whilst in the Eurasian
subspecies the breast is streaked with brown. Apart from a blackish eye mask,
the head is also white, while the eyes are yellowish. Like owls, the Osprey has
an outer reversible toe, allowing it to grasp its prey with two toes in front
and two behind. It can grow to 66 centimeters tall and has a wingspan of up to
180 centimeters. Sexes are rather similar, but males are slimmer than females
and have a paler breast band.
