Common Leopard

Name of a medium-sized, sun-loving species of butterfly, with the binomial name Phalanta phalantha. It has a wingspan of around 5 to 6 centimeters. Above, the wings are orangey with black leopard-like spots and wavy lines. The underside of the forewings is similar, but more glossy and with tawny-brownish markings near the apexes, whilst the hindwings are largely tawny-brownish, with both dark and light spots and markings. In the dry season form, there is a prominent pinkish-violet to purplish gloss on the underside of the wings. The sexes are alike. See also WILDLIFE PICTURES.
