ARCHITECTURE & ICONOGRAPHY

  Indra on Erawan

Thailand

The top of the gable of Sanam Supachalasai (fig.), the oldest and main venue at the National Stadium in Bangkok, has the national tricolour, known in Thai as thong trai rong.

This centrally located Thai flag is flanked by statues of Indra (fig.), the Vedic god of the heavens, weather and war. He has a green complexion and holds a trident and a sword, and is seated on a white three-headed elephant (fig.) known as Erawan (fig.) or Airavata (fig.). The statues are fashioned after the emblem of Bangkok (fig.) and made in a style reminiscent of Socialist Realism.
