The distinct protuberance on the head of adult male Flowerhorn cichlids can reach huge proportions. These fish are artificial hybrids that do not exist in the wild and were first produced in
Thailand,
Malaysia, and Taiwan.
These fish were
at first produced by crossbreeding both existing species of
cichlids with other hybrids, at the end of the second
millennium, and are today much sought-after by fish
hobbyists worldwide.
