  Emerald Buddha, Luang Prabang

Laos

A copy of the Emerald Buddha in summer attire at Wat Mai, a temple in Luang Prabang, the Laotian city that once accommodated the original Emerald Buddha (fig.), after it was taken there in 1552 AD by the Lan Na king Setthathirat, who was also crown prince of Lan Chang, when he returned to Laos to assume the throne of his father, whom had died 5 years earlier. It remained in the then capital of Lan Xang until 1564, when both the capital and the statue were moved to the Vientiane, where it remained until after the Siamese conquest of Vientiane in 1778 AD.
